We receive a lot of questions about the latest and greatest websites and online awesomeness, and the question of the moment is: What is SlideShare? The online world is in constant flux, so it can be difficult to keep up with all of the brilliant websites that are coming out on a daily basis. Luckily, MySMN is obsessed with being on top of the latest online trends so we are happy to delve into what SlideShare has to offer.
Launched in 2006, SlideShare is a slide hosting service that enables users to upload slideshows for public or private use. SlideShare has been referred to as a “YouTube for slideshows” because anyone can view, share, and comment on public slideshows. Not only can public slideshows be viewed, but they can also be downloaded or embedded onto other sites to be reused or remixed for another individual or organization. Users can upload using PowerPoint, Keynote, Open Office, or PDF presentations.
With 60 million monthly visitors and 140 million page views, SlideShare is currently the world’s largest community for sharing presentations. Originally, SlideShare was created for businesses to easily share slideshows among employees, but as it expanded, SlideShare now hosts a large number of slideshows that are uploaded for entertainment as well. Presentation topics span from 10 Creativity Tips From The World’s Greatest Scientists, to A Visual Story Of Linkedin, to Streamlining Nonprofit Organizations.
SlideShare was founded by Rashmi Sinha, Jonathan Boutelle, and Amit Ranjan and launched October 4, 2006. The rapid growth of SlideShare has garnered lots of press and co-founder Sinha was named amongst the world’s Top 10 Women Influencers in Web 2.0 by Fast Company. In May 2012, SlideShare was acquired by Linkedin for a reported $119 million.
